CHOOSING A PROPANE FIRE PIT
It’s easy enough to just buy a fire pit on good looks alone. How it looks is obviously pretty important, after all you’ve got to look at it and live with it.
Everyone knows that good looks are just skin deep, and there’s probably a few more things that are worth thinking about before buying.
HEAT OUTPUT
An outdoor fire pit is always going to add amazing drama to your patio or garden.
If that’s all you’re looking for then heating may be just a secondary consideration. Most folks are buying a fire pit for heat and drama though and that’s why it’s important to know and understand what heat to expect from your pit before you purchase.
Propane fire pits all have a BTU rating, but what is it, and what does it mean.
BTU stands for British Thermal Units. One unit is the amount of energy required to heat one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.
Pretty hard to visualise what that means but don’t worry because you’re buying a propane fire pit and the flame is generally going to be adjustable then all you need to know is the more flame the more heat. Everyone knows that anyway. Right?

FIRE PIT LOCATION
Since you’re buying an outdoor fire pit table to enjoy the stunning visual effect of real flames you need to see them to enjoy them. Obvious enough!!
That’s where BTU output, burner size and location are important. If you live in a warmer state like Texas then to enjoy the full flame experience you need to buy a unit with a smaller burner and less BTUs.
It doesn’t make sense to buy a unit with an output of 70000 BTUs and have to turn the flame size down to 30000 BTUs to stop frying your guests. Here less is definitely more!!
It’s an easy choice if you live in a colder state, just go big.
FIRE PIT HEIGHT
Fire pits like the ones we have reviewed here can all double up as occasional tables. Super useful for outdoor winter entertaining but really handy well for outdoor events all year round.
We know we’ve been thankful for having our trusty fire pit tables for summer evening events on our patio. Not for heat or ambience, but simply for displaying drinks and eats.

BURNER FILLER MATERIAL
The pit you pick should come with some kind of filler material but there’s a massive range of after market fire pit burner fillers to choose from. Different colors, grade sizes and materials.
Since propane gas burns burns quite cleanly the filler material is going to maintain it’s color and lustre well. The most common material is glass but there are other options too like lava rocks and pebbles for your fire pit table.
ARE PROPANE FIRE PITS SAFE ?
Gas fire pits are far safer than wood burning fire pits for several reasons.
First, there is less risk of hazard involving animals and small children with gas fire pits. Gas burning fire pits produce no sparks or embers which eliminates risk animals chewing the wire mesh screens and children playing with hot ashes or embers.
Second, gas fire pits have adjustable heat and burn at lower temperatures then wood or coal burning fire pits. This reduced temperature makes them safer should someone get too close to the flames.
Third, Since gas fire pits don’t emit any smoke they are less of a health hazard too you when burning in enclosed areas and don’t or damage or pollute furnishings adjacent to the pit.

Propane fire pit tables are one of the most convenient heat options for your deck. They provide you with a nice focal point to enjoy the outside with family and friends.
Fire pit tables on decks seldom causing issues. However, you should always use a heat resistant barrier between the fire pit and the deck to prevent potential structural and cosmetic damage to the wood or composite underneath.
Building codes some places require a fire-resistant barrier between your propane fire pit and wooden decks or patio covers. It makes sense, and we always recommend laying a thermal blanket below the fire pit no matter what the codes specify.
