Buying a good set of hot tub steps often comes as a bit of an after thought. They’re an easily forgotten extra to the main purchase..
An accessory to the the main player, that brilliant hot tub you’ve just bought.
But for many folks they are more much than just an accessory, they are in fact indispensable.
Seniors obviously can benefit from a little help getting in and out of the tub but so can lots of other people too.
Given that a slip, trip or fall can be occasionally be life changing it makes sense to invest a little more in providing a safe way in and out of the tub.
The best hot tub steps should be strong and durable with generous non slip treads, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be elegant too.
There’s plenty of styles and colour options and you’ll surely find one to suit your budget and your hot tub’s livery.
Our hot tub experts have curated a list of what they consider the best spa steps from manufacturers that we trust.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT HOT TUB STEPS
HEIGHT
Most free standing hot tubs stand between 30 and 33 inches in height. Of course most tubs have molded seating, but not all.
If you own a hot tub without built in seating there can be a a surprising distance to the bottom of the tub.
Seniors in particular can find it quite challenging to enter and exit these type of tubs. That’s why we have included a handrail option in our reviews for additional reassurance and safety.
So when you are choosing your hot tub steps find the difference between the height of the steps and the bottom of the hot tub.
The steps you choose should not be too tall when compared to your hot tub walls. They should just give a small height assist to get you into the tub, and there should not be a great difference between the top of the step and the bottom of the hot tub.
NON SLIP
Obviously hot tub steps should be non slip, that means non slip on the treads and on the bottom too. All spa steps should be non slip however there are products available to add extra security if you find your steps are not meeting your expectations.
- SlipDoctors non-slip spray for wood, vinyl and laminate is the ideal solution to drastically increase the slip resistance of floors and stairs
- The easy to apply anti-slip spray can be used in wet areas, wood stairs, bathrooms, decks, and foyers
- The clear coat slip resistant spray is formulated using epoxy making it extremely durable indoors and outdoors
BUILDING YOUR SPA STEPS
These days pretty much all of the steps come in a flat pack and have to be assembled after you receive them. It’s hardly a challenging job though, generally there is just four or five pieces to snap or hammer together.
But be aware some steps can be used for curved or flat sided hot tubs depending on how they are assembled so make sure you understand the different assembly orientation before you snap them together.
They are easy enough to assemble but to tear them back down if you get it wrong is at best a hassle, and at worst it can damage the steps. Expect to spend just five minutes to build your steps and that includes a coffee break !!
- HIGH TRACTION TO PREVENT SLIPS: 80 Grit Aluminum Oxide traction pad boosts foot traction with a subtle texture, giving you utmost protection without sacrificing comfort. Provides extra foot traction for protection to your child, family, elderly, and pets on slippery surfaces
